Please apply directly through the following form for our November training cycle: https://forms.office.com/e/p3UAbVHC87
Any problems in accessing the form or further enquiries about the training please email ussu.nightline@surrey.ac.uk
Nightline is a listening and information service for students, run by trained student volunteers. The service is open during the night when other specialist university welfare services are closed. Nightline is confidential and anonymous; students don't have to tell us anything about themselves, not even their name.
We are recruiting new listening volunteers for the Surrey Nightline service. Please remember that our listening volunteers are anonymous and therefore must not discuss their application process with anyone.
As a Nightline listening volunteer your tasks and responsibilities will include:
Answering phone calls and instant messages whilst on shift from Surrey students
Providing support to other Nightline volunteers on shift with you
Ensuring anonymity and confidentiality are maintained at all times
Attending meetings, training and aiming to volunteer for a minimum of 3 shifts per semester
Contributing your ideas and feedback to the coordinators to help improve various aspects of the service
A full shift is from 7:00pm to 7:00am. You won't be answering calls and messages for the whole of this time, so you can watch movies, study, rest and chat with your fellow volunteers. Your comfort on shift is a top priority for us - You can bring food, laptops, blankets etc. We also provide plenty of snacks to keep you topped up!
You will receive comprehensive training for the listener role. Each training cycle will consist of three days of training, run on a Thursday evening followed by Saturday and Sunday during the day.
Our next training cycle will be taking place in October 2024: Thursday 17/10/2024 (18:00-22:00), Saturday 19/10/2024 (09:00-18:00), and Sunday 20/10/2024 (09:00-18:00). It is required to come to all 3 days of the training, which will take place in-person on campus! You will be provided with lunch and many, many snacks.
Please note, you must be at least 18 years old to apply for this role.
If you have any questions about the role or making an application, please do not hesitate to contact us at:
ussu.nightline@surrey.ac.uk
We look forward to hearing from you!
You will be able to meet like-minded students and develop some of the best relationships you could ask for during your time at University. The training will improve your listening skills, throughout our committee will guide you through the role and support you along the journey.
You can also log your volunteering hours, which improves your employability!
You will develop lifelong key skills such as active listening and empathy, which brings endless benefits.
We are looking for students that are willing to develop their active listening skills, among an abundance of others that will come with Nightline Listening Volunteer training. Applicants must have a desire to support other students, whilst appreciating that Nightline is a confidential, anonymous, non-judgemental, non-directive, and non-advisory service.
