Surrey Marrow works in partnership with Anthony Nolan and aims to facilitate registration to the stem cell donation register, focusing particularly on the recruitment of those between the ages of 16 and 30. In addition to this, Marrow will collect funds that will be donated directly to Anthony Nolan and used to make a difference in a multitude of ways - for example, covering the registration fee to the stem cell register. Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer every 15 minutes, and the fundraising and recruitment completed by Marrow could be life-saving.
Since Anthony Nolan was founded in 1974, over 16,000 people have received a transplant from donors who have joined the stem cell donation register. Those with blood cancers like leukaemia, or blood disorders like anaemia, sometimes rely on stem cell donations for survival. All recruitment to the stem cell donation registry can make a difference, but recent research shows that stem cells donated by those 16-30 delivers the best patient outcomes - therefore, the work carried out by Marrow societies at universities across the nation can make a massive difference.
