We work with young people aged 9-13 from local schools in Hackney and Haringey, whose teachers think they would benefit from some extra support. The Young Pirates come along to our ships after school – they are a weird and wonderful out-of-school learning environment complete with secret passageways, and an underwater cave. Our Young Pirates work one-to-one with volunteers through targeted reading support, and on unique creative publishing projects, developing their literacy, confidence and perseverance.
We work with pupils in years 5 -7 who are referred to us by their teachers for our after-school reading and writing sessions. After attending these weekly sessions for a whole academic year,, on average young pirates' reading ages increase 52% faster than age related expectations.
We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic, caring, have a sense of fun and are able to support a Young Pirate in their learning independently.
We believe that learning should be an adventure, and are based on a Pirate Ship in the heart of Dalston!
