SATRO is a long established educational charity working across the South East, inspiring and engaging young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), both in terms of subject choices and the career paths they lead onto. Over nearly 35 years, SATRO has had an impact on over 470,000 young people, helping them understand how to put STEM skills into practice. We achieve this through a diverse and challenging range of programmes and activities. SATRO brings together schools, employers and their staff (as volunteers), on a one to one basis, at classroom or school level, in regional challenges and at large scale events. Our programmes Empower, Educate and Enthuse young people through primary, secondary and sixth form.
With a STEM skills shortage in the UK and excellent career pathways from vocational trades to apprenticeships, and through higher education studies there is a real opportunity to make a difference to the future of our STEM industries.
SATRO’s current volunteers, many of whom have been with us for over 10 years, would say the reason they support us is to:
Inspire the next generation in STEM subjects whilst in primary school
Enable young people with an interest in STEM to learn more at secondary school
Use their expertise and knowledge to improve STEM education more widely
Be a role model to students by sharing their experience
Engage young people with careers in STEM industries
Work with industry to improve their engagement with the education system
To support early career development through outreach engagement
The students and schools we work with benefit from the experience and enthusiasm our volunteers bring to all our activities. Whilst there may be a limit to how much you can teach in a session, there is no limit to how much you can inspire!
A willingness to share your career/educational experiences to inspire the next generation into the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) work.
In every activity we support our volunteers by organising all the administration related to the activity, providing briefings for events and identified roles for the day, an opportunity to share your personal experience and support at all stages of involvement. For those taking on a longer commitment such as mentoring we provide full training, support and management. We are keen to ensure that volunteering with us is a pleasure not a burden to you donating your time to a charitable cause. Whether as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility programme or as an individual, we will work with you to ensure your time is well used, makes an impact and is enjoyable.
SATRO also invites volunteers to a number of events throughout the year including opportunities to meet other volunteers and to celebrate what we do at the annual SATRO Awards.
