Surrey Coalition of Disabled People is a not-for-profit organisation with members living across Surrey and North East Hampshire. We promote the rights of disabled people to have equality of opportunity and to live independently.
We have a Tech to Community Connect (TtCC) project, which aims to reduce digital exclusion across Surrey. To combat the loneliness and isolation that results from digital exclusion, we match trained volunteer Tech Angels to vulnerable adults in Surrey who need help with accessing the internet. We provide devices on long term loan where needed, and the Tech Angel helps them learn to use the devices, to download relevant apps, and build their confidence in using technology. In addition, the service connects people with online activity and social groups – another way to help reduce loneliness and social isolation.
In recent years, and particularly now in a post-pandemic society, so much connection happens digitally; those without the knowledge or equipment to connect to the internet are at a very high risk of loneliness and isolation, which have a significant negative impact on physical and mental health. Recent research indicates that loneliness is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day!
People who are passionate about helping others, are patient and calm, and have good basic digital skills.
