Lauriston Lights
We bring together university students and bright children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their full potential both personally and academically.
ABOUT US:

Lauriston Lights was set up to tackle the education gap seen in many disadvantaged areas. By the age of 11, highly able children will have very different chances in life depending on their socio-economic background. Lauriston Lights offers early intervention during the crucial transition between primary and secondary school and onwards, through summer schools and extension days. We provide a research based approach based on proven strategies to develop mentees’ higher order thinking skills, relational intelligence, character strengths and the realisation of their potential.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Our vision is for highly able children from low socio-economic backgrounds to achieve the same academic success and personal fulfilment as their more privileged peers at secondary school onwards, and feedback from schools has shown we have a huge impact of confidence and motivation for children going into year 7 and 8, after attending one of our camps. By empowering children to embrace and seek learning opportunities, allowing them to create working relationships with university students and industry professionals, and aiding them to realise their potential, the children we work with are given the tools to focus their education and achieve both short and long term goals. These children can go on to further education, apprenticeships and work, and in turn pay back into their community.
