Dose of Nature
Dose of Nature is a psychologically led, nature-based mental health service whose purpose is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of individuals through increased engagement with the natural world.
ABOUT US:

Our work is rooted in scientific evidence that demonstrates the physiological and psychological benefits of spending time in nature. We deliver nature prescriptions to people referred by their GP with a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, trauma, and addiction. Our model is a positive, hopeful and an outward-looking approach to mental health.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Our 8-week Dose of Nature Prescription Programme is a genuine alternative to both medication and traditional talk therapy, and our recovery rates are significantly higher than those for comparable mental health therapies (over 75% for a Dose of Nature prescription, compared with 33-50% for an equivalent NHS treatment). Our 8-week Nature prescription involves a one-to-one 8-week programme in which people meet on a weekly basis in a natural space with a trained Dose of Nature Guide. Through psychoeducation, experiential activities, and motivational support, they acquire new habits that last a lifetime.

OUR VALUES:
Dose of Nature values connecting and engaging with nature in order to improve mental health and wellbeing.
THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
To date, we have delivered over 45 individual Dose of Nature Prescriptions to people referred to us by 62 local GPs from 25 GP practices across the Boroughs of Richmond and Kingston. We have trained over 7 Volunteer Dose of Nature Guides. Those who come to us range in age from 16 years and upwards. Following the success of our programme in Richmond and Kingston, we have been funded by Surrey County Council to open a new hub in North Guildford at Dapdune Wharf.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

We are looking for empathetic, compassionate individuals with a love for the outdoors to train as Dose of Nature Guides and help deliver our Dose of Nature Prescriptions across the North Guildford area. You do not need any specific knowledge or experience to be a Dose of Nature volunteer, just an enthusiasm for working with people and spending time in nature. We will provide full training on being a nature guide.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

Our volunteer positions have the wonderful advantage of providing healing benefits to both our volunteers and participants at the same time. After completing a Dose of Nature training course, you will be matched with a client who you will accompany on weekly nature visits, for around an hour, for eight sessions. You will meet in local natural spaces where you’ll encourage mindful engagement with natural surroundings through varying techniques we will share with you.
