GASP Motor Project
Hands on learning that helps drive change
ABOUT US:

GASP Motor Project works with young people (14-19) who are disengaged from their education, community and future. We use basic motor mechanics and engineering as a means to reengage young people with realistic and achievable career goals. GASP runs daytime and evening sessions for those on the periphery of mainstream education or who are on the cusp of anti-social or criminal behaviours. Working in small groups, our instructors act as mentors and guides, supporting vocational training with clearly defined outcomes and objectives. Each young person is treated as an individual, and is encouraged to develop their softer skills, such as team-working, problem-solving and communication, all of which facilitate a move towards productive and rewarding futures.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Many of the young people GASP works with are disengaged from their education and future. Many come from disadvantaged backgrounds and demonstrate challenging behaviours. GASP invites these young people to engage with a worthwhile programme of learning and vocational training. We partner with local employers and employees including McLaren, Brooklands Museum, Woking Community Garage and Stanhope-Seta to facilitate effective community engagement. GASP offers a unique environment: a fully functional workshop with trained instructors who support and mentor these young people in a relaxed, yet professional, and engaging manner.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT:

GASP is a charity working to support education and statutory service providers. Our overarching aim is to ensure that the young people of Surrey have access to meaningful and engaging futures. We identify each young person as an individual and take them at face value - everyone should be treated the same and have access to the same opportunities. We have a fantastic core staff who excel at engaging with challenging and difficult young people, and we need volunteers to further enhance that experience. The work can be emotionally hard, but the outcomes are worth it.
