ABOUT US:

Our Residential Life team are here to help on-campus students make the most out of their time in University accommodation. They are available to help you navigate any challenges that you may come across, including getting used to living in University accommodation and dealing with issues with your room or your flatmates. They will also be organising opportunities to help you build a community and enjoy your time in residence.  We work alongside our Peer Supporters, who are fellow Surrey students, who help new students settle in and feel at home. The Peer Supporters can help you make connections or signpost you to helpful services.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

The work of a Volunteer Residential Assistant holds immense value because it directly impacts the quality of student life at the University of Surrey. At the core of this role is the mission to create a supportive, inclusive, and engaged community. In a time when students may feel overwhelmed by academic pressures, social challenges, and the transition to university life, the RA serves as a vital link to resources, advice, and a sense of belonging.

Inclusion, Integrity, Innovation, and Inspiration
OUR AWARDS:

THINGS WE ARE PROUD OF:
Since the introduction of the Residential Life team in 2022, they have supported more than 1000 students. So if you live on campus and feel like you're struggling, you are not alone! Please be assured that the Residential Life team offers accessible, impartial and non-judgmental one-to-one advice and guidance. It is a 'safe space' to discuss any issues of concern. In addition, last year, we welcomed over 500 students to community-buildings events for a fun and social time.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

Main Responsibilities

Face-to-Face Visits: As an RA, your role involves conducting friendly visits to communal areas of University accommodation. It's
important to note that these visits are limited to communal areas and do not extend to personal bedrooms. During these visits, you will
include details about the Conditions of Residence, how to raise concerns with ResLife and Security (via website, email, Report and
Support, or phone numbers), upcoming campus events and activities, and address any student-life-related queries. You'll also be delivering
general messages provided by ResLife to the flat, ensuring everyone is informed and connected.

Signposting and Support: Act as a point of contact for students, signposting them to relevant support services and resources available on
campus. Provide guidance and assistance in accessing appropriate support when needed.

Work Log and Statistics: Maintain an updated log of all completed work, including statistics and relevant information (e.g., reports in
relation to all interactions with students expressing concerns or issues). This log will be essential for tracking progress, evaluating
outcomes, and reporting to the ResLife team.

Social Media Engagement: Collaborate with the ResLife and Peer Support teams to create and share engaging content on social media
platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Discord, and TikTok. Monitor and respond to student queries and discussions on these
platforms, ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination.

Event Support and Community Engagement: Assist with activities and campaigns to support students in adapting to their residential life, or
raise awareness of key issues relating to the student experience, such as fire safety, consent, drug and alcohol awareness, etc. Also, there will
be opportunities to participate in University events such as open days, welcome week, student arrivals and inductions etc.

Inclusivity and Wellbeing: Actively contribute to the development of a positive and inclusive environment within the residential
community. Support the wellbeing and mental health of students, promoting an atmosphere of respect, understanding, and support.
