I feel the stares, the pointed fingers marking me,
She said they would help me.
Their appraisal bursting with pity,
Labelling me into a distant corner,
I'm worried soon I'll be forgotten.
She said it would be so much better here.
It's quiet here.
The night no longer pierced with loud bangs.
She said I would be happier, that I would be free.
The air is free here.
Free of dust, free of boundaries.
The wind whistles through the trees shamelessly.
She said I wouldn't have to be scared anymore.
The night is silent, but it still scares me.
When the dark settles I reach for her hand,
She said she would be with me, both of us safe together.
It's lonely here.
I make-believe her voice singing me to sleep,
Her imagined presence my lullaby.
She promised she would come for me.
But she's not here.
Mummy lied.
